Architectural Record brings together key figures shaping the built environment today and into the future. The 2023 Innovation Conference will focus on a cohort of designers coming into their own in this period—designing important cultural buildings and creative models for housing, spearheading alternative approaches to sustainability, and establishing new pedagogies.

In a talk focused on spaces for the performing arts, Joshua Ramus, founder of New York-based REX, will discuss radical flexibility. Through an examination of the 14-year-old Dee and Charles Wyly Theater in Dallas, and two just-completed REX projects—the Perelman Performing Arts Center in Lower Manhattan and the Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University, in Providence, he’ll showcase evolving ideas about adaptability and an approach toward spatial and technical flexibility whose ultimate aim is to inspire and enable interdisciplinary collaboration and invention in the arts.

This course examines the use of opaque glass as a façade material in a drained and back ventilated rainscreen system. Highlighted within will be the design consideration and benefits thereof when designing with and specifying opaque glass rainscreen. The importance of the building science principle of exterior wall assembly control layers, and the role they play in providing occupant health and safety will be emphasized for use with opaque glass, open-joint, drained and back ventilated complete rainscreen systems. The presentation will also address sustainability, safety and durability benefits that are associated with properly designed and manufactured opaque glass panels. while providing an understanding of required test criteria and typical test results when opaque glass panel are used within an open-joint, drained and back ventilated complete rainscreen system.

Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office will discuss radical reuse. Based in Shanghai, the city’s cultural, urban, and historic contexts function as a point of departure for design inquiries that span across a wide spectrum of scales. An early project completed in 2010, Vertical Lane House, draws from the rich experience of a typical Shanghai longtang to transform a 1930s army building into a boutique hotel. More recently the office converted a pre-industrial “urban village” into a high-end guesthouse. These and other adaptive reuse projects will be the focus of their presentation, called Ruinophilia.
